Brunch places in Amsterdam

A friend asked me if I am aware of any nice brunch places in Amsterdam. I don't know all but these few popped up on the top of my head.

1. Wilhelmina Cafe

It is a very small cosy cafe just 2 minutes walk from my place. Very understated and with excellent service. They offer almost everything really. Sandwiches both cold and grilled, muesli, various styles of eggs, soups, pancakes and cakes. Do remember to try their soups, the pastrami sandwich (Reuben) or the tuna melt. They also have a set menu for brunch which consists of a smaller portion of the soup of the day, a sandwich of your choice and french toast! For strong coffee drinkers, always remember to ask for a double shot of anything. Their coffee is not really their strength.

My favourite part of Wilhelmina is their watch cat Zebra.

2. Baton

We went to this place on recommendation from a fellow food lover. If you want a place with a canal view, this is perfect. At the corner of Herengracht and Herensstraat, Baton is a 3 story corner cafe. In the summer, you can also sit outdoors next to the canal. Well, if you can tolerate the Dutch windy summer that is. Anyway, the coffee is excellent, the sandwiches are huge. I would recommend to share if you are not usually a big eater.

3. Global Dish

Global Dish is a place for you if you are in the mood for something exotic. The concept is sandwiches inspired by different cuisines from around the world. Their menu is also divided as such e.g. African, Asian, American, European, Oceanic. To give you an example, they have a sandwich named Sfax with is filled with hummus, tahini and sweet and sour red peppers.

The only drawback is that the service is not exactly fast. So go there only if you are happy to wait.

4. Dim Sum at Oriental City

It is no surprise that dim sum appears on this post. It is a common brunch for any Chinese. Dim Sum means little small things. So essentially it is Chinese Tapas. Someone asked me once why is there only 3 of each in every little bamboo basket. Well dim sum started with the Cantonese in Southern China, where the word for number four has the same sound as death. So it is bad luck to serve or give anything with the number 4 in it. 5 seems too many so it ended up being served in threes.

To be honest with you, I haven't tried Dim Sum at many restaurants. I tried one, liked it and stuck to it. Oriental City is the famous 3 stories restaurant at the edge of Chinatown. It can get very crowded so don't forget to make a reservation. Actually I usually prefer to go during the off peak period.

If you have no idea what to order, these are some of the fail safe orders:
Har Kauw (steamed prawn dumplings)
Siew Mai (steamed pork dumplings)
Char Siew Pao (steamed buns filled with BBQ pork)
Char Siew Cheong Fun (steamed rolled dough with BBQ pork)
Lor Mai Kai (glutinous rice with chicken)
Lor Pak Kor (pan fried yam cakes)

If anyone knows of any other good brunch places, feel free to add to comment.
