My favorite Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam

I grew up on Indonesian food. Weird? Not so. Most of the domestic helpers my mom hired while I was growing up were Indonesians. In Singapore, it is a very common practice especially when you have both parents working full time and there was no such thing as parental leave those days.

I blog about these 3 places because they remind me of home. The food is very authentic. Their menu do not just feature the regular Beef Rendang or Babi Gambing which you can find in any place. If you are adventurous, do not order the rice table but from the ala carte menu.

Srikandi - For that special evening
The service is impeccable, the food is tasty and the ambience is traditional yet intimate. The price however is a little on the high side. If you do enjoy some kick, try the Ikan Bakar Jimbaran which is a dorade marinated in spicy balinese sauce and grilled in banana leaves.

Puri Indonesia - Suitable for a bigger group
The ambience is casual. The restaurant is also much bigger, allowing for bigger groups and hence can be slightly noisy on weekends. Nevertheless, service is excellent and food is abundant. I tried the Ikan Pepesan, a grilled mackerel with spicy chili basil sauce. Sounds very much like the Ikan Bakar Jimbaran from Sri Kandi but has completely different taste. This has stronger tanginess coming from the lemon grass and tomatoes.

Toko Ikan Mas - My favorite takeaway
It's just like what we would call 'economical rice' back home. A friend would call it 'point point rice' because you stand before a glass display of pre-cooked foods and point to whatever dish you want. The selection is simple but tasty with the usual suspects such as Babi Gambing and Cap Cai. Although pre-cooked they have a high turn-over rate, so you are guaranteed that the food is fresh. Most importantly is that the rice is freshly cooked everyday. The only place for left-over white rice is in fried rice. Any other uses for it is a cardinal sin.

They don't have a place to sit so it is only takeaways. They do stock some supplies in case you looking for a Asian supermarket.
