Make your own dried fruits

I love dried fruits. They are healthy and tasty and they make a great snack instead of a chocolate cookie. However it is really difficult find dried fruits without added sugar and if you do find them, it is cost about €5 per 100 grams.

B recently introduced me to the concept of drying your own fruits. Well it is not a new concept considering people from ancient civilisations have been drying foods as a form of preservation for centuries. It is though a little more difficult in Amsterdam considering the amount of sun we get in a whole year. So she bought a new machine called the dehydrator which dry fruits over a low temperature of 40 degrees Celsius, retaining all the goodness and taste without added sugar!

I was really intrigued by what you can do with it. It comes with a recipe book and she even transform kale into a really yummy snack. So now I am really tempted to get one as well. The only downside is the size and the looks of the machine! The brand she uses is Excalibur. There are a few models on their website but the smallest is bigger than a standalone microwave oven and looks like a computer from the 80s. I wish they would make something slightly more friendly to the modern kitchen for example to the standard size of a build-in microwave? Surely it can't be that difficult.
